North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has urged his army to prepare for war with the United States and its allies, state media said Saturday, as Pyongyang ramps up the rhetoric ahead of US-South Korea military drills..
Kim's comments came after South Korea and the United States Friday conducted a joint naval drill involving 10 South Korean warships and a US Aegis destroyer, ahead of the launch of large-scale military exercises that have enraged the North.
"The prevailing situation where a great war for national reunification is at hand requires all the KPA (Korean People's Army) units to become (elite) Guard Units fully prepared for war politically and ideologically, in military technique and materially", he was quoted by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying.
North Korea regularly ratchets up hostile rhetoric at times of joint US-South Korea military exercises that spark a sharp surge in tensions on the divided peninsula.
Kim called on the military to train hard in order "to tear to pieces the Stars and Stripes", in comments made while opening a new hall at the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum in Pyongyang, KCNA said
A top political nemesis of President Vladimir Putin was shot and killed early Saturday in central Moscow, Russian police said, one day before an opposition rally was scheduled to take place.
Boris Nemtsov, 55, a former deputy prime minister, was shot four times from a passing car as he was walking on a bridge just outside the Kremlin. The Kremlin said that Putin will personally oversee the investigation into his death.
The shooting potentially could create a political crisis in Russia, regardless of the motive or who was behind the shooting.
A sharp critic of Putin, Nemtsov assailed the government's inefficiency, rampant corruption and the Kremlin's policy on Ukraine, which has strained Russia-West ties to a degree unseen since Cold War times. The Washington Post reported that Nemtsov had angered Putin's government two years ago when he charged that billions of dollars had been stolen from funds designated for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, his hometown.
He served as a deputy prime minister in the 1990s, and once was seen as a possible successor to Boris Yeltsin, Russia's first elected president.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Alexeyeva told reporters on the scene that Nemtsov was walking with a female acquaintance, a Ukrainian citizen, when a vehicle drove up and unidentified assailants shot him dead. The woman wasn't hurt
In response to Scott Walker’s comments at CPAC comparing ISIS to union members, DNC Communications Director Mo Elleithee released the following statement:
“If Scott Walker thinks that it’s appropriate to compare working people speaking up for their rights to brutal terrorists, then he is even less qualified to be president than I thought. Maybe he should go back to punting.”
The Islamic State fighter known as “Jihadi John,” who has been seen in videos of showing the beheadings of Western hostages, has been recognized by the BBC as Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born British man in his mid-20s from West London.
According to the BBC, Emwazi was known to UK security services, but his name has been withheld from the public for operational reasons.
Last August, Emwazi, sporting a black robe and speaking with a thick British accent, was featured in an Islamic State video in which he apparently killed American journalist James Foley. He was later believed to have been seen in the videos of the beheadings of US journalist Steven Sotloff, British aid worker David Haines, British taxi driver Alan Henning, and American aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, also known as Peter, the BBC reported.
Emwazi was a “person of interest” to the British MI5 intelligence agency at least since 2011, as he had been discussed in semi-secret court cases relating to extremism overseas and in the UK, the BBC reported. He had been previously described as a member of a network involving at least 13 other British extremists
