Bob Beckel on the Midterms: There's Going to Be An October Surprise That Has to Do With National Security

Beckel: 'It's going to shake things up'

NRO

The polls may suggest Republicans will see gains in this November’s elections, but former Democratic strategist Bob Beckel thinks they shouldn’t get too comfortable. The Five co-host mysteriously signaled Democrats have something up their sleeve.

“I’ll tell you: I would expect an October surprise,” Beckel said on Thursday. “I think I know what is — I’m not going to say it, but I think I know what it is — and it is going to shake things up, and it has to do with national security.”

Beckel’s secrecy comes as President Obama faces perhaps the most significant foreign-policy challenge of his presidency, the growing threat of the Islamic State

Bill Clinton: 'We Can't Win a Land War in Iraq, We Proved That'

Actually we did win a land war in Iraq Bill, and President Obama threw it away.

Here's Clinton, who we're told is the most brilliant politician in the world, saying we can't win, 'we proved that'

On Thursday night's "The Daily Show," Clinton said the United States has proven it can't win an Iraq war with boots on the ground, but that moderate Sunni tribal leaders working with an inclusive Iraqi government can.

"We can't win a land war in Iraq, we proved that"...But they can and we can help them," Clinton said. <

Bolton: 'If ISIS Went After the Aussies, They're Coming After Us Very Soon' (Video)

BOLTON: It's no wonder the president thinks it's going to take three years. In the meantime, ISIS isn't waiting around. The Australian government, in their largest anti-terrorism in Australian history, 800 police officers arrested a substantial number of suspected ISIS terrorists who were about to begin beheadings in Australia. If the ISIS people are coming after the Aussies, they're coming after us very soon, too.

The combined wealth of the world’s billionaires increased by 12% to $7.3 trillion over that period, which means that billionaires now control nearly 4% of the world’s wealth. “The members of this group of ultra wealthy individuals form one of the most exclusive clubs in the world: there is only one billionaire for every three million people on the planet,” the report says.

Only 36 Percent of Americans Can Name the Three Branches of Government

Only 15 percent of Americans could correctly identify the chief justice of the United States

washingtonpost
Wednesday marked national Constitution Day, the 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. But only 36 percent of Americans can actually name the three branches of government the Constitution created.

That’s according to a new survey from the Annenberg Public Policy Center, and it shows a huge percentage of Americans might need to take a civics refresher course.

Only 38 percent of Americans knew the Republican Party controls the U.S. House of Representatives, while 17 percent think Democrats are still in charge. The number of people who knew Republicans were in charge has dropped 17 percent since the last time Annenberg asked, back in 2011, right after Republicans reclaimed control.

An identical number, 38 percent, knows Democrats run the Senate, while 20 percent believe Republicans control the upper chamber. Only 27 percent knew it takes a two-thirds majority of the House and Senate to override a presidential veto.

Report: Justice Department Finds No Evidence NJ Gov. Chris Christie Knew of Bridge Closures in Advance

According to federal sources speaking to WNBC, the investigation has turned up no evidence Chris Christie had any prior information or directed the closure of the traffic lanes.

So DOJ spent 9 months investigating a lane closure on the GW. But has no interest whatsoever in investigating the IRS scandal, Lois Lerner and missing hard drives, the VA and secret waiting lists, Benghazi, voter intimidation at polling stations and the CIA improperly searching Senate Intelligence Committee computers.

But a lane closure? They're on it.

NBC New York
The U.S. Justice Department investigation into New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s role in 'Bridgegate' has thus far uncovered no information he either knew in advance or directed the closure of traffic lanes on the George Washington Bridge, federal officials tell NBC 4 New York.
The September 2013 closures -- where several entrance lanes to the George Washington Bridge in Ft. Lee were shut down causing a traffic nightmare for commuters -- has been the subject of several federal and state investigations.

Federal officials caution that the investigation begun nine months ago is ongoing and that no final determination has been made, but say that after nine months authorities have uncovered no information Christie either knew in advance or ordered the closure of traffic lanes.

According to one former federal prosecutor, who had no involvement in any of the probes into the bridge closure, investigations of this kind will often turn up a solid connection early in the inquiry.

Air Force Dumps 'So Help Me God' From Enlistment Oath

'So help me God' is optional now thanks to some atheists who threatened the Air Force with a lawsuit.

washingtontimes
Members of the U.S. Air Force will no longer be required to say “so help me God” during their enlistment oath.

A legal review of rules that required the phrase occurred after the American Humanist Association threatened to sue on behalf of an atheist airman. The unnamed airman at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada was denied re-enlistment Aug. 25 after crossing the phrase out of the oath.

We take any instance in which Airmen report concerns regarding religious freedom seriously,” said Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James, Air Force Times reported Wednesday. The change in policy goes into effect immediately.

“We are pleased that the U.S. Department of Defense has confirmed our client has a First Amendment right to omit the reference to a supreme being in his reenlistment oath,” Monica Miller, an attorney with the AHA’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center, said in a statement Wednesday, Air Force Times reported. “We hope the Air Force will respect the constitutional rights of Atheists in the future.”

The Army, Navy and Marine Corps all give enlistees the option to say “so help me God.”

WATCH- Ed Henry Runs Circles Around WH Press Sec. Josh Earnest over 'Combat Troops' on the Ground

Like his boss, WH press secretary Josh Earnest is simply in over his head.

Ed Henry: So, these U.S. troops that are alongside the Iraqi troops, if they are fired upon by ISIS, are they to do nothing?
Josh Earnest: U.S. troops have rules of engagement
Ed Henry: OK, if they fire back, that means they are in combat and it's a combat zone.

Josh Earnest ends up twisting himself into a pretzel so he can say there will be no 'combat troops' on the ground.

9th Circuit Affirms That It’s Illegal To Wear American Flag Shirts On Cinco De Mayo

The full slate of Ninth Circuit judges has thus agreed with a lower district court and with a trio of appellate judges that officials at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif. could censor students who wanted to wear flag-emblazoned shirts.

The federal appeals court issued its denial of an en banc hearing on Sept. 17 — Constitution Day.

“[N]o further petitions shall be permitted,” the court ordered.

The trouble dates back to Cinco de Mayo (May 5) in 2010, when officials at Live Oak High — a school with a predominant Mexican-American student body — forced the students to remove their American flag-festooned shirts. Administrators called the shirts “incendiary” and worried that fighting would break out between white and Latino students if Latino students noticed the shirts. So, assistant principal Miguel Rodriguez told the students to turn their shirts inside out or leave school.

Students of Mexican heritage told local media that the students wore American flag T-shirts should apologize. They said ethnically Mexican students wouldn’t wear a Mexican flag on the Fourth of July (not a school day, but never mind).
