New Video Appears to Show The Execution American Journalist Steven Sotloff by Member of Islamic State

Steven Sotloff, 31, was abducted last year while covering the conflict in Syria

nytimes
The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has beheaded Steven Joel Sotloff, the second American executed by the Islamic militant group, and posted a video of it on the Internet, the SITE Intelligence Group, a research organization that tracks jihadist web postings, said Tuesday.

The execution of Mr. Sotloff, 31, came despite pleas from his mother aimed directly at ISIS’s top leader seeking mercy for her son, a freelance journalist who was captured in northern Syria a year ago.

Word of Mr. Sotloff’s beheading came two weeks after James Foley, 45, another American journalist, was beheaded by ISIS, which warned that Mr. Sotloff would be the next to die

In the latest video, Mr. Sotloff describes himself as “paying the price” for the Obama administration’s decision to strike ISIS targets in Iraq. The same masked fighter who appeared in the video of Mr. Foley’s beheading also appears beside Mr. Sotloff, asserting, “I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State.”

The SITE group also said ISIS was threatening a third captive, a Briton it identified David Cawthorne Haines, as the next beheading victim.

Obama Job Approval Falls To 45% in CA

President Obama had an approval rating of 62% in January of 2013.

He carried California 60-37 over Mitt Romney in 2012

Sacramento Bee
President Barack Obama’s approval ratings have fallen to a record low in California, with nearly as many voters now disapproving of the job Obama is doing as approving.

Only 45 percent of California voters hold a favorable view of Obama’s job performance, according to a new Field Poll released today, down 5 percentage points from June and dropping below 50 percent for the first time since late 2011. Disapproval climbed to 43 percent.

Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll, said the trend is ominous for Obama, because the latest declines come from his base.

Support among California Democrats dropped 8 percentage points to 68 percent over the last three months. Approval was down 11 points in Los Angeles County and 7 points in the Bay Area, usually liberal strongholds.

“These are constituencies that have been strong followers,” DiCamillo said. But there’s “frustration in the president not getting his way in affecting policy in Washington.”

Obama’s approval ratings have dropped steadily across the country since his second term began, though they have remained stronger in California than in most states. As high as 62 percent following his 2013 inauguration, support for Obama in California has hovered over 50 percent for the past year.

CDC Director: Ebola Outbreak Spiraling Out of Control, 'Much Worse Than the Numbers Show

"It's bad now, much worse than the numbers show. It's going to get even worse in the very near future" -CDC Director Tom Frieden

CNN International
-- The Ebola outbreak in West Africa is much worse than official figures show, and other countries are unintentionally making it harder to control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Tom Frieden told CNN on Tuesday.

"We've seen outbreaks of Ebola before. This is the first epidemic spreading widely through many countries, and it is spiraling out of control," said Frieden, who recently returned from a trip to the region. "It's bad now, much worse than the numbers show. It's going to get even worse in the very near future."

More than 2,600 people have been infected by Ebola in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria since the outbreak began in December, according to the World Health Organization. More than 1,500 have died.

"This is making it really hard to get help in and to respond effectively to the outbreak," he said on CNN's "New Day."

"What we're seeing is a spiraling of cases, a hugely fast increase in cases, that's harder and harder to manage," he said. "The more we can get in there and tamp that down, the fewer cases we'll have in the weeks and months to come."

Unbelievable Flashback Headline: Obama 2010

Ready for this one?

It's over because he says it is...

How did that 'softer approach' work out for him?

Telegraph 5/27/2010
President Barack Obama has rejected George W. Bush's doctrine that placed the "war on terror" at the center of American foreign policy

The US president has instead replaced it with a softer approach stressing "new partnerships" and multilateral diplomacy.
"Our long-term security will not come from our ability to instill fear in other peoples but through our capacity to speak to their hopes," Mr. Obama said in a message introducing a new national security strategy
In the 52-page document, drawn up after 16 months of deliberations, Mr Obama outlines a much broader set of priorities and methods than Mr Bush's tightly-focused determination to eradicate Islamism by any means possible and alone if necessary.

"We will always seek to delegitimize the use of terrorism and to isolate those who carry it out," it states. "Yet this is not a global war against a tactic – terrorism – or a religion – Islam

American Crossroads New Ad: Mary Landrieu Is For Washington DC, Not Louisiana

Landrieu is the latest senator to be confronted by questions about just how much she actually lives in her home state.

Where Landrieu differs from others who have faced similar questions, though, is that she has routinely worked on issues important to the District of Columbia. Hence, there are a whole bunch of news clips talking about her focus on D.C. -- which isn't exactly helpful for her very difficult reelection race.

American Crossroads is up with a damning new web ad splicing together many of these clips. It ends with a particularly devastating quote from embattled/outgoing D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray (D), who appears to describe Landrieu as "the senator representing the District of Columbia until we become the 51st state of the United States..."

Backlash After Man Does Ice Bucket Challenge on 10-Month Old Baby (VIDEO)

Screen grab-
Not real smart.

HOUSTON -- Some say a grandfather took the ice bucket challenge way too far when he poured freezing cold water on his 10-month-old baby.

"I was shocked," said the girl's father, Claude Dalcour. "Everybody I know was pretty much shocked and appalled.

Dalcour said he's going through a nasty divorce with the girl's mother. Things got even nastier when he saw his ex father-in-law's Facebook post.

"You don't do that to an infant," said Dalcour. "He should know better." The video has gone viral and thousands of people have seen it on Facebook.

One concerned stranger from out of state even sent a link to the Texas Department of Children and Families. The agency wouldn't confirm whether it is actually investigating the case and taking action.

Dalcour said he's gone to police about the incident.

"It's a big deal," he said. "It's not his child, it's my child."

$2.4B Atlantic City Casino Closes After Just 2 Years

Revel.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. AP/ABC News — The most spectacular and costly failure in Atlantic City's 36-year history of casino gambling begins to play out Monday when the $2.4 billion Revel Casino Hotel empties its hotel.

Its casino will close early Tuesday morning.

Revel is shutting down a little over two years after opening with high hopes of revitalizing Atlantic City's struggling gambling market. But mired in its second bankruptcy in two years, Revel has been unable to find anyone willing to buy the property and keep it open as a casino. It has never turned a profit.

Revel will be the second of three Atlantic City casinos to close in a two-week span. The Showboat Casino Hotel closed its doors Sunday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16. Revel still hopes to find a buyer for the property after it has ceased to operate as a casino.

Viral Photo- Baby Gives Thumbs Up During Ultrasound

Nicknamed the 'Fonzie fetus'

USA Today reported:
This baby isn’t even out of the womb yet, but it already seems to be living the “no worries” lifestyle.

Take a look at this sonogram photo posted to Reddit on Aug. 28 by the soon-to-be father, Brandon Hopkins, that has now gone wildly viral.

“Recent ultrasound results look good,” Hopkins, 31, of Meadville, Pennsylvania, captioned the sonogram of the baby giving a clear-as-day thumbs up for the camera.

The happy parents don’t know the sex of the child yet, but confirmed they’re expecting twins in January.

“I thought it was really cool,” Hopkins told ABC News of the perfectly timed shot.

Fans of the photo on social media have been quick to nickname the laid-back baby “Fonzie fetus,” after the “Happy Days” character who always flashed a thumbs up

Only 28 Percent of ALS Ice Bucket Donations Are Used For Research

And the President of ALS Foundation makes a whopping $339,475 salary

newsmax
The "ice bucket challenge" to raise support for ALS research has gone viral in recent weeks, drawing celebrities, everyday people and even cartoon character Homer Simpson. But critics are now saying only a fraction of the money raised is actually going toward research.

The ALS Association was founded in 1985 to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as "Lou Gehrig’s Disease." So far, almost $100 million has been raised through the ice bucket challenge.

But critics point to a pie chart on the ALS Association's own website that breaks down how it spends the money it receives. According to the chart, 28 percent is spent on research.

Other expenditures include 19 percent for patient and community services, 32 percent for public and professional education, 14 percent on fundraising and seven percent on administration.

The ALS Association has changed the percentage spent on research from 27 to 28 percent after criticism emerged, explaining on its website that rounding had originally given a total of only 99 percent.
