Kansas Parents Ask School District to Reconsider Plans to Have Michelle Obama Speak at Graduation

TOPEKA — Some parents in Topeka are asking the school district to reconsider plans to have first lady Michelle Obama speak at a graduation ceremony.

The school district announced Thursday that the first lady would speak at a ceremony May 17, the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision that made school segregation unconstitutional.

The speech would require the district to combine graduation ceremonies of all its high schools and limit the number of people who could attend.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports several parents criticized the plan Thursday evening at a school board meeting.

Most objected to having to reduce the number of relatives who could see their children graduate. Others said graduation should focus on students and not become a political event

Poll: 37% of Voters Fear the Federal Government

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Likely U.S. Voters now fear the federal government, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Forty-seven percent (47%) do not, but another 17% are not sure.

Perhaps in part that’s because 54% consider the federal government today a threat to individual liberty rather than a protector. Just 22% see the government as a protector of individual rights, and that’s down from 30% last November. Slightly more (24%) are now undecided.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on April 15-16, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports

WATCH: Michigan Judge Erupts on Woman Convicted in Killing; 'I Hope You Die In Prison!'

Judge lets her have it...

JACKSON, Mich. (wxyz)  - If a judge could throw the book at a convicted killer, Michigan Judge John McBain managed to do so on Wednesday.

Not physically, but certainly by his stinging words. He had a lot of words for 31-year-old Camia Gamet, the woman convicted of killing her boyfriend Marcel Hill in March. Gamet claimed it was self defense and showed no remorse.

A first-degree murder conviction by law meant she would get life behind bars.

Still, while family members spoke she would only roll her eyes and laugh, but McBain, who serves in the Jackson County Circuit Court, would have none of it. Woman laughs at upset family members and that's when the judge weighs in

"I agree with the family members, I hope you die in prison'...'If this was a death penalty state, you'd be getting the chair"  He also tells her to shut up and threatens to duct tape her mouth

Watch until the end-

PHOTO: Texas Church Attempts Record Size Chalk Portrait of Jesus

-MASSIVE- 17,000 square ft. portrait of Jesus using sidewalk chalk.
-It took 6,700 pieces of colored chalk and 125 pieces of charcoal.
-'Hundreds of volunteers'
-Can be seen by flyers coming in and out of Dallas-Forth Worth Airport

GRAPEVINE, Texas - (click2houston) Just days before Easter, a megachurch near Dallas is trying to get people to talk about Jesus.

The Grapevine Church is attempting a world record size chalk portrait of Jesus Christ. The 17,000 square foot portrait takes up the entire church parking lot -- about half an acre.

They first marked off the parking lot by blocks and just coloring different colors. It's an all-day affair -- it took hundreds of volunteers 13 hours.

Derric Bonnot with Fellowship Church said, "We're making the world's largest portrait of Jesus. And we've had literally hundreds of volunteers here today of all ages. We believe the church should be the most creative entity on the face of the planet. Not boring, not humdrum."

Bonnot said, "We should be out there thinking up new ways to tell the story of who Jesus is and who God is and so hopefully this just catches people's attention to want to see more and want to know more."

Putin: Ukraine's Leaders Are Dragging the Country Into an 'Abyss'

Adolf Putin, looking for a reason to launch an invasion into Ukraine responds to 3 Russian fighters who were killed yesterday.

Putin also calls reports of Russian agents in Eastern Ukraine 'rubbish'

"It's all nonsense, there are no Russian units, special services or instructors in the east of Ukraine"

Reuters - Separatists attacked a base of the Ukrainian national guard overnight and Kiev said three separatists were killed, the worst bloodshed yet in a 10-day pro-Russian uprising in east Ukraine, overshadowing crisis talks to resolve the conflict.

Ukrainian, Russian and Western diplomats arrived for the emergency talks in Geneva, but there was little hope of any progress in resolving a crisis that has seen armed pro-Russian fighters seize whole swathes of Ukraine, while Moscow masses tens of thousands of troops on the frontier.

Putin  accused the authorities in Kiev of plunging the country into an "abyss".

Kiev fears that he will use any violence as a pretext to launch an invasion.

"Instead of realizing that there is something wrong with the Ukrainian government and attempting dialogue, they made more threats of force ... This is another very grave crime by Kiev's current leaders," Putin said in a televised q and a session with the Russian public that has become an annual event.

"I hope that they are able to realize what a pit, what an abyss the current authorities are in and dragging the country into," said Putin, who dismissed as "rubbish" accusations that Russian agents were acting in east Ukraine.

Congressman Vance McAllister Reelection Chances Hurt By Smoochgate- 51% Would Not Vote For Him Again

One week ago, Representative Vance McAllister said he would not resign his House seat. But a new poll shows that he may have some reelection difficulty

In a recent poll, conducted after Rep. Vance McAllister was caught making out with his district scheduler and friend’s wife, a little more than half of respondents said the recent extra marital problem of McAllister would keep them from voting to re-elect him this November.

According to the Monroe News Star, 51 percent of those polled in the 5th Congressional District, which McAllister currently represents, said they would not vote for him again after the kissing scandal, which has yet to be settled.

Even higher, 53 percent of the random sample of 1,300 registered voters of the 170,000 registered in the district said there is not anything that McAllister can do or say that will restore their trust in him.

Longtime pollster Darrell Glascock of the Glascock Group in Pineville said he was commissioned by three Baton Rouge lobbyists to conduct the poll. He told the Monroe News Star he suspected that the lobbyists were interested in finding out if they could run a candidate in November and potentially unseat McAllister.
