Islamic State Tells Followers To Attack U.S., French Citizens - ISIS Website

Reuters
BAGHDAD, Sept 22 - Islamic State has urged its followers to attack citizens of the United States, France and other allies who have joined a coalition to fight the militant group, the SITE monitoring website said on Monday.

The United States is building an international coalition to destroy the radical Sunni Muslim group, which has seized swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria and proclaimed a caliphate in the heart of the Middle East.

U.S. and French warplanes have struck Islamic State targets in Iraq and on Sunday the United States said other countries had indicated a willingness to join it if it goes ahead with air strikes against the group in Syria too.

Islamic State spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani said the military intervention by the U.S.-led coalition would be the "final campaign of the crusaders," according to a transcript published by SITE.

Alleged White House Intruder is Decorated Combat Vet

Omar Jose Gonzalez is a decorated Army veteran who served in Iraq

Fox News
The Texas man accused of dashing through the White House front door Friday with a folding knife is a decorated Army veteran and marksman who served in Iraq, the U.S. military said Sunday.

Omar Jose Gonzalez, who is being held in connection with illegally trying to enter the White House complex, served more than 13 years over the course of two Army stints.

The 42-year-old Gonzalez was discharged in 2003 after serving six years and completing his military service obligation. He retired in 2012 as a result of a disability, after serving roughly seven more years, according to his military record.

The military does not provide details about a soldier's disability due to privacy considerations.

Gonzales, of Copperas Cove, Texas, allegedly jumped the White House fence along Pennsylvania Avenue at 7:20 p.m. Friday, then crossed the North Lawn and opened the mansion’s front door before being apprehended by a Secret Service police officer standing guard.

Pope Francis Slams Extremists for 'Perverting' Religion to Justify Violence

NBC News
TIRANA, Albania - Pope Francis denounced how extremists around the world are "perverting" religion to justify violence as he arrived Sunday in Albania, a Balkan nation where Christians and Muslims endured brutal religious oppression under communism but today live and work together peacefully.

Security was unusually tight for Francis' visit to the majority Muslim country amid reports that militants who trained in Iraq and Syria had returned and might pose a threat.

In his opening speech, Francis said Albania's interreligious harmony was an "inspiring example" for the world, showing that Christian-Muslim coexistence was not only possible but beneficial for a country's development.

"The climate of respect and mutual trust between Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims is a precious gift to the country," Francis said. "This is especially the case in these times in which authentic religious spirit is being perverted by extremist groups, and where religious differences are being distorted

Panetta: “No I wasn’t. I really thought it was important to maintain a presence in Iraq. The decision was that we outta at least try to maintain 8,000-10,000 U.S. troops there. Plus, keeping some of our intelligence personnel in place to be able to continue the momentum we had in the right direction.”

On Location Video: What the Front-Line Fight Against the Islamic State Looks Like

An unlikely alliance - Kurdish forces team up with the Iraqi Army because of the threat from ISIS

Great video from globalpost on the front lines in Iraq
 — As the world tries to cobble together a coalition of the willing to fight the Islamic State (IS), there's already an unlikely alliance of front-line forces working to hold back the violent extremists.

Kurdish forces now share a significant percentage of their autonomous region's border with IS, since the brutal terror group overtook broad areas of Iraq in the last several months.

The IS threat has created some unlikely alliances. Kurdish forces are teaming up with the Iraqi army to retake areas to which they each lay claim. Even more unusual, given the two countries' antagonistic history, Iranian troops are providing ground support to Iraq from the south, while the US — usually at odds with Iran — is providing fighter jets to bomb IS positions from above.

Electrocution

Reuters
LOUISVILLE KY. - A Kentucky firefighter who was severely injured a month ago while helping college students take part in an "ice-bucket" fundraiser died on Saturday from his injuries, authorities said.

Captain Tony Grider, 41, of Campbellsville was hurt along with three other firefighters when an aerial ladder got too close to a power line as their department doused a university band with water.

Kyle Smith, the chief of Campbellsville Fire and Rescue, said Grider died at noon at University of Louisville hospital.

"His family would like to sincerely thank all of those who have been there for them following this tragic accident," Smith said in a statement.

Grider and his three colleagues were injured on Aug. 21 when they were attempting to help students at Campbellsville University participate in the ice bucket challenge to raise funds to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Grider and another firefighter, 22-year-old Simon Quinn, sustained electrocution injuries in the initial incident. Two other firefighters suffered lesser injuries coming to their aid, officials said

NBC News
American and Canadian fighter jets intercepted eight Russian planes flying in international airspace west of Alaska this week, NBC News reported.

While the encounter was without confrontation, the number and type of Russian planes intercepted was unique, a senior defense official told NBC News on Friday.

Two American fighter jets intercepted six Russian planes, including two fighter jets, over the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday, while Canadian fighter jets intercepted two Russian Bear long-range bombers on Thursday over the ADIZ, the official said.

The official said that the U.S. hasn't seen these types of planes in ADIZ space since Cold War days.
