CDC Head: 'Not Impossible' Others in U.S. Could Get Ebola

CDC Director Tom Frieden talks to Stephanopoulos

ABC News
The country's top medical official who has vowed to stop Ebola "in its tracks" in the U.S., conceded today that it's "not impossible" that others will contract the disease.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said an extensive tracking process is underway in the wake of the first Ebola diagnosis in the United States, with special focus on the patient’s family and health staff.

“We have a seven-person team in Dallas working with the local health department and the hospital, and we will be identifying everyone who may have come in contact with him and then monitoring them for 21 days,” Frieden said.

The city of Dallas, which has activated its Emergency Operations Center on "Level 2: High Readiness," said, "We are currently evaluating 12-18 people that the patient confirmed to have the Ebola virus was in contact with."

In addition, the three ambulance crew members that brought the patient to the hospital were tested for Ebola. The tests were negative, but the crew members were sent home and will be monitored for the next three weeks, the city said in a statement.

Pelosi Calls For Secret Service Director To Step Down **UPDATE** Secret Service Chief Pierson Resigns

Secret Service Lapses `Inexcusable,' Pelosi Says

politico
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed on Wednesday a call from a senior House Democrat calling for the U.S. Secret Service director to resign.

The California Democrat said she had “full confidence” in Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) who suggested that Julia Pierson should resign her post as director after Secret Service officers failed to stop an intruder from scaling the White House’s fence and breaking through the doors of the North Portico.

“If Mr. Cummings thinks she should go, I subscribe to his recommendation,” Pelosi said. Cummings is the top Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee, which has probed the Sept. 19 breach by Omar Gonzalez.

Earlier on Wednesday, Cummings told radio host Roland Martin, “The president is not well served. … I think this lady has to go – Ms. Pierson.”

Gonzalez, who was indicted on three counts in federal court Tuesday, made it into the Green Room of the White House before an off-duty Secret Service agent tackled him.

Report: President Obama Rode Elevator With An Armed Security Contractor Who Had 3 Criminal Convictions

'A violation of Secret Service security protocols'

bostonglobe
WASHINGTON — Published reports say President Barack Obama rode an elevator this month with an armed security contractor who had three criminal convictions, a violation of Secret Service security protocols.

The latest embarrassment for the Secret Service comes after agency Director Julia Pierson took full responsibility for a Sept. 19 breach of the White House. The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post report that the latest incident took place in an elevator during Obama’s Sept. 16 visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The Post says agents questioned the contractor and discovered his criminal history after he refused to stop video recording the president with a phone camera.

Agents didn’t know he was armed until a supervisor fired the contractor on the spot and the man turned over his gun.

The Secret Service did not immediately respond to an email request for comment.

California Governor Jerry Brown Signs Statewide Ban on Plastic Bags

SB270 prohibits stores from providing disposable plastic grocery bags to shoppers, and requires them to charge for paper bags.

nbc reported:
Governor Brown signed the nation's first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.

The measure first proposed by Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of Los Angeles would prohibit single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and large pharmacies in 2015 and at convenience stores in 2016.

It includes $2 million in loans to help manufacturers shift to producing reusable bags and lets grocers charge 10 cents each for paper and reusable bags.

The bill had sparked one of the most contentious debates in the last weeks of the legislative session, with aggressive lobbying by environmentalists and bag manufacturers.

For years, a statewide plastic bag ban has been an elusive goal for lawmakers trying to reduce the buildup of plastic waste in oceans and waterways that costs millions of dollars to cleanup. About 100 local jurisdictions in California already have adopted similar bans, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.
