The Islamic militants who spread fear around the globe through beheadings, crucifixions and mass killings are a “very real” threat to the city — and unlike anything law enforcement has ever seen.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Tuesday that ISIS has mastered social media, one of the main tools it has used to attract new recruits.
“This is the evolving world of terrorism,” the city’s top cop said. “We are staying ahead of it. We are focusing on it, and I believe that we are as prepared as any entity could be to deal with the threats. But the reality is that we are living in a new era of potential terrorism.”
Bratton’s warnings come as the terror group responsible for the videotaped executions of two American journalists and a British aid worker are calling for “lone wolf” attacks on Times Square.
The recent call for terror — found in an online chat room that claims to be affiliated with ISIS — came with directions on “how to prepare a bomb in the kitchen” as well as a list of tourist spots that will create “pictures of horror.”
“Times Square is considered one of the most important and famous tourist attractions in the city,” the group wrote
