Clinton 43%, Trump 40%
Hillary Clinton held a 7 point lead in June
Donald Trump is closing in on Hillary Clinton, according to a new poll from Monmouth University.
As he gets set for this week's Republican National Convention, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has cut Clinton’s lead in half over the last month, the poll released Monday found.
Clinton, who is expected to be nominated next week at the Democratic National Convention, still holds a 43 to 40 percent lead over Trump among registered voters.
But that is down considerably from the 6 to 7-point lead Clinton held in June, Monmouth said.
Among those who are more likely to vote in November, Clinton holds a 45 to 43 percent lead over Trump.
Trump’s support among independents has risen to 40 percent, while Clinton’s has plateaued at 31 percent.
