"Cancer has spread"
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
The cancer has spread to various parts of his body, though he has not said if it's terminal. He promised to make a public statement next week, according to a release Wednesday afternoon.
Carter - a native of Plains, GA - had a mass removed from his liver during a surgery Aug. 3 at Emory University.
The foreign policy accomplishments during his presidency were notable, including establishing diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China and the Camp David Accords. He was also an education reformer and advocate for the environment.
Carter released an autobiography earlier this year titled A Full Life.
