"No One Is Going To Surrender" Qaddafi Son Vows To Fight To Death, Says Dad OK
Seif al-Islam Qaddafi
cbsnews
TRIPOLI, Libya - Muammar Qaddafi's son Seif al-Islam vowed Wednesday to fight to the death, insisting no regime loyalists would surrender to the rebels, who are closing in on Qaddafi's final strongholds.
Seif al-Islam, Qaddafi's longtime heir-apparent, said he was speaking from the suburbs of Tripoli and insisted his father was fine.
"We are going to die in our land," he said in an audio statement broadcast on Syria's Al-Rai television, claiming he was speaking for loyalist leaders who had met in the Qaddafi bastion of Bani Walid. "No one is going to surrender."
His statement came shortly after a conflicting interview on Al-Arabiya television by a man claiming to be his brother, al-Saadi, who said he was ready to mediate talks with the rebels in order to bring the fighting to an end.
"The most important thing is to stop the bloodshed," al-Saadi told the Saudia Arabian television network, claiming he was speaking on behalf of his father.
Seif al-Islam's voice was easily recognizable, but al-Saadi's was more difficult to confirm.
A rebel commander in Tripoli, Abdel Hakim Belhaj, said earlier Wednesday that al-Saadi was trying to negotiate terms for his own surrender if his safety could be guaranteed. When asked about that report, al-Saadi said he had talked to Belhaj and several other rebel officials, but that he was only offering to surrender to bring an end to the bloodshed

Syria's Attorney General Resigns Over 'Mass Execution in Hama'
Adnan Bakkour, Syria's top attorney witnessed the mass execution of 72 protesters
telegraph
Syria's attorney-general has resigned after witnessing a mass execution of 72 prisoners in one day and over four hundred bodies being buried in public parks, according to a video statement posted online last night
In the video, the man, thought to be Adnan Bakkour, the country's leading legal official, said he was resigning because of the "al-Assad regime and his gangs".
The state news agency reported on Monday that Mr Bakkour had been kidnapped by rebel gunmen in the village of Karnaz on his way to work in the central city of Hama.
Mr Bakkour says in the video that he saw the killing of 72 prisoners at Hama's central prison on July 31, including peaceful protesters.
He says 420 bodies were buried in mass graves in public parks, that 10,000 peaceful protesters are being held in prisons and that 320 prisoners died after being tortured.
He claims that troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad buried people alive by demolishing homes in Hama with people inside. He then named "criminals" who had assassinated unarmed protesters
Speaker Boehner Urges Obama to Reschedule Jobs Speech Amid Conflict With GOP Debate
foxnews
House Speaker John Boehner has asked President Obama to postpone his planned jobs speech by a day, after the White House announced Wednesday that it was scheduling the address for the same night as a GOP 2012 primary debate in California.
The president needs permission from congressional leaders in order to deliver the address. While House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi welcomed the president, Boehner said in a letter late Wednesday afternoon that he would like the president to pick a different time. He did not mention the debate. Since the House does not come into session until Sept. 7, with votes scheduled that evening, Boehner expressed concern about the time it would take to conduct the security sweep in time for a presidential speech."It is my recommendation that your address be held on the following evening, when we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks," Boehner wrote

Solyndra, a major manufacturer of solar technology in Fremont, has shut its doors, according to employees at the campus.Flashback May 2010. Obama "the true engine of economic growth will always be companies like Solyndra"
"I was told by a security guard to get my [stuff] and leave," one employee said. The company employs a little more than 1,000 employees worldwide, according to its website.
Shortly after it opened a massive $700 million facility, it canceled plans for a public stock offering earlier this year and warned it would be in significant trouble if federal loan guarantees did not go through.
"people are standing around in disbelief." The employees have been given yellow envelopes with instructions on how to get their last checks.
Solyndra was touted by the Obama administration as a prime example of how green technology could deliver jobs. The President visited the facility in May of last year and said "it is just a testament to American ingenuity and dynamism and the fact that we continue to have the best universities in the world, the best technology in the world, and most importantly the best workers in the world. And you guys all represent that. "
The federal government offered $535 million in low cost loan guarantees from the Department of Energy. NBC Bay Area has contacted the White House asking for a statement.
WH Press Secretary Jay Carney on Obama's Speech To a Joint Session Falling on the Same Day As the Republican Debate: "It Is Coincidental"
Yeah...Good one
politico
The White House suggested Wednesday that the hosts of next week’s GOP presidential debate can change the time by an hour so it doesn’t interfere with President Obama’s planned jobs speech to Congress.
POLITICO and NBC are hosting a Republican debate Sept. 7 at 8 p.m., the same time the White House said Obama asked Congress to make an address.
Asked about the timing on Wednesday, press secretary Jay Carney said, “It is coincidental.”
“There are a lot of factors that go into scheduling a speech before Congress, a joint session,” he said. “You can never find a perfect time. ... There are many channels, there are many opportunities for people to watch the president, and obviously for people to watch the debate.”
Asked later if the interruption is then an “added bonus” for the White House, Carney suggested that isn’t the case. “There's one president, there's 20-some-odd debates," he said.
“There are many opportunities for the American people. There's a choice they can make to watch the president, to watch the debate,” he said. “A network could make a decision to alter the timing of the debate by an hour.”
Carney later elaborated, saying that if “sponsors chose and the candidates so chose to adjust the timing of their debate ... that would be completely fine with us, in the spirit of democracy.”
Obama Requests a Joint Session of Congress to Lay Out Jobs Plan
Once again, it's about him. If he has a plan, just submit the plan. But he can't do that, it has to be a speech to a joint session that will be on every channel

President Obama has requested to speak to a joint session of Congress the evening of September 7 to lay out his vision for creating jobs, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said Wednesday.Back a couple weeks ago, John Boehner's press secretary Brendan Buck responded to the news that Obama would give another speech to lay out his jobs plan
"Our nation faces unprecedented economic challenges, and millions of hardworking Americans continue to look for jobs," Mr. Obama wrote in a formal letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid requesting to address both chambers.
"As I have traveled across our country this summer and spoken with our fellow Americans, I have heard a consistent message: Washington needs to put aside politics and start making decisions based on what is best for our country and not what is best for each of our parties in order to grow the economy and create jobs. We must answer this call," Mr. Obama wrote.
An aide to Boehner said he did not immediately have an official response

Sharpton's 'PoliticsNation' Debut on MSNBC Bombs - Loses to Michael Smerconish Guest-Hosting 'Hardball'
Ratings disaster...

The debut of Al Sharpton's new program on MSNBC did not go very well Monday.Total viewers Monday
As TVNewser reported, "PoliticsNation" actually attracted less viewers than Michael Smerconish did guest-hosting for Chris Matthews on "Hardball"
Sharpton only had 519,000 total viewers in his debut. That's less than a guest-host on "Hardball" who few Americans have ever heard of.
Possibly more concerning to MSNBC top brass - assuming they actually care about ratings! - was Sharpton getting less than one-third the viewers of Fox News's "Special Report" as well as being soundly beaten by CNN's "Situation Room."
"PoliticsNation" also did poorly in the all-important demographic aged 25 to 54

Phoenix AZ (KPHO) - An 86-year-old Arizona man is expected to make a full recovery after his eye socket was impaled with a pair of pruning shears.Actual X-Ray
Leroy Luetscher of Green Valley suffers some slight swelling of his upper and lower lids and minor double vision in the affected eye following the July 30 accident, said Dr. Julie Wynne, assistant professor in the University of Arizona Department of Surgery.
Luetscher was working in his yard when he dropped a pair of pruning shears, Wynne said. When he went to pick up the shears, he lost his balance and fell face-down on the handle. The tool penetrated his eye socket underneath his eye and went down into his neck, Wynne said.
"Half of the pruning shears was sticking out and the other half was in his head," Wynne said.
Luetscher was rushed to University Medical Center's Level 1 Trauma Center, where he was attended to by a team of specialists.
"The handle was actually resting on the external carotid artery in his neck," said Dr. Lynn Polonski, clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology.
The team was able to remove the shears, rebuild his orbital floor with metal mesh, and save his eye.

August is Now America's Deadliest Month In The Afghanistan War
66 troops killed in August eclipses the previous record of 65 in July 2010
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — August has become the deadliest month yet for U.S. forces in the nearly 10-year-old war in Afghanistan, increasing pressure on the Obama administration to bring troops home sooner rather than later.
The 66 U.S. service members killed this month eclipses the previous record of 65 killed in July 2010, according to an Associated Press tally. Nearly half the August deaths occurred when insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter Aug. 6, killing 30 American troops, mostly elite Navy SEALs.
Violence is being reported across Afghanistan despite the U.S.-led coalition's drive to rout insurgents from their strongholds in the south.
Though American military officials predicted high casualties this summer as the Taliban try to come back after recent offensives, the grim milestone increases pressure on the Obama administration to withdraw U.S. forces quickly.
The military has begun to implement President Barack Obama's order to withdraw the 33,000 extra troops he dispatched to the war. He ordered 10,000 out this year and another 23,000 withdrawn by the summer of 2012, leaving about 68,000 U.S. troops on the ground. Although major combat units are not expected to start leaving until late fall, two National Guard regiments comprising about 1,000 soldiers started going home last month. (Associated Press)

Much-arrested Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah was taken away from the White House in restraints Tuesday afternoon.
Hannah was taking part in an ongoing protest against the unbuilt Keystone XL oil pipeline. "Sometimes it's necessary to sacrifice your freedom for a greater freedom," Hannah said in Lafayette Park before her arrest. "And we want to be free from the horrible death and destruction that fossil fuels cause, and have a clean energy future."
With dozens of others, Hannah sat on the sidewalk in front of the White House and refused three requests from the Park Police to move.
The group organizing the protest, Tar Sands Action, has said the Keystone pipeline -- which will stretch from Canada to the Gulf -- is among the most important environmental decisions that confront the president.
An estimated 100 people were arrested outside the White House Tuesday. In Minneapolis, more than 20 protesters held up signs outside the American Legion national convention, at which President Barack Obama spoke Tuesday

Senator Cornyn: Instead of Reassigning Those Responsible For Fast and Furious Within the DOJ, Eric Holder "Should Ask For Their Resignations"

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is calling for Attorney General Eric Holder to fire the head of the ATF.
Cornyn said that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives's (ATF) acting director Kenneth Melson should be asked to resign instead of being reassigned to the Office of Legal Council.
The move was announced by the Department of Justice on Tuesday after months of speculation about Melson's role in a botched gun-tracking operation that might have contributed to the death of a Border Patrol agent.
“Instead of reassigning those responsible for Fast and Furious within the Department of Justice, Attorney General Holder should ask for their resignations and come clean on all alleged gun-walking operations, including a detailed response to allegations of a Texas-based scheme,” said Cornyn in a statement.
Cornyn wrote a letter to Holder earlier this month asking for DOJ to turn over any information they have on similar gun-tracking operations that have been conducted or are ongoing in Texas.

Mexico Arrest 5 Linked To Deadly Casino Attack
No surprise. They are members of the deadly Zetas drug cartel
reuters
Mexico has arrested five suspected drug gang members in connection with the torching of a casino last week that killed at least 52 people, one of the worst attacks on civilians in the country in years.
Thursday's arson attack on the upmarket casino in the northern city of Monterrey has deepened skepticism about President Felipe Calderon's fight against drug cartels, putting new pressure on his embattled government to root out crime.
Rodrigo Medina, governor of Nuevo Leon, the state where Monterrey is the capital, said on Monday the five suspects arrested had confessed to involvement in the killing and that the hunt for other perpetrators continued.
"From the initial indications we've observed the target was the casino, not the civilian population," Medina told a televised news conference, adding that a strong line of investigation was that the casino was being extorted.
Medina said the suspects identified themselves as members of the Zetas drug cartel, which has ravaged the state and other parts of Mexico with killing, kidnapping and extortion
Romney To Make First Appearance At A Major Tea Party Rally
Labor day
politicalticker
Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – For the first time, Mitt Romney will headline a major national tea party rally.
On Labor Day the Republican presidential candidate will join the Tea Party Express' "Reclaiming America" bus tour in Manchester, New Hampshire, organizers tell CNN.
The group's fifth national bus tour kicked off last week in California and will end in Tampa ahead of the CNN/Tea Party Express debate on September 12th. Thirty stops are on the bus tour's schedule.
Romney's appearance at the event is significant: he has not headlined any events in the Tea Party Express' previous four bus tours. Meanwhile, leaders of other tea party groups say they cannot recall any major tea party events that Romney has spoken to or attended since the movement began in 2009.
When contacted by CNN, Romney's campaign did not dispute that assertion, though a spokesman did stress that Romney has frequently met with tea party activists and supports their ideals of limited government, less spending and lower taxes.
Also, on the same day Romney addresses the Express rally, tea party booster Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina is holding a conservative forum in the state capital of Columbia. Among the GOP presidential candidates slated to attend are tea party favorites Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and conservative businessman Herman Cain. Romney turned down DeMint's invitation, citing scheduling conflicts.

Report: Gadhafi Forces Perched Children on Top of Tanks To Deter NATO Airstrikes
Gadhafi troops forcibly detained 107 civilians and used them as human shields to guard military munitions from NATO attacks
msnbc
Both sides in Libya's ongoing civil war are being accused of abuses, with forces loyal to fallen leader Moammar Gadhafi blamed for a vast array of possible war crimes and rebels said to be indiscriminately targeting black people.
Pro-Gadhafi troops perched children on tanks to deter NATO attacks, human rights investigators said in a report on Tuesday. It was part of a pattern of rapes, slayings, "disappearances" and other war crimes that they said they found.
The report by Physicians for Human Rights, titled "Witness to War Crimes: Evidence from Misrata, Libya," is based on interviews of residents in the embattled city of Misrata conducted in June.
A popular uprising in Libya in February against Gadhafi's 42-year-old rule resulted in a civil war with rebels backed by a NATO bombing campaign from the air starting in March.
"Four eyewitnesses reported that (Gadhafi) troops forcibly detained 107 civilians and used them as human shields to guard military munitions from NATO attacks south of Misrata," said the PHR report.
"One father told PHR how (Gadhafi) soldiers forced his two young children to sit on a military tank and threatened the family: 'You'll stay here, and if NATO attacks us, you'll die, too.'"
"The abuses that we gathered evidence of in Misrata are some of the most egregious war crimes and crimes against humanity I've heard of in Libya," said Richard Sollom, deputy director of PHR

Rick Perry Leading Big In New CNN Poll

Washington (CNN) – A new national survey is further proof that Texas Gov. Rick Perry's entrance earlier this month into the race for the White House has dramatically altered the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll of Republicans and independent voters who lean towards the GOP, Perry now sits atop the list of Republican presidential candidates, with strong support from most demographic groups.
The survey, released Monday, indicates that 27 percent of Republicans nationwide support Perry for their party's nomination, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second bid for the White House, at 14 percent. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin follows at ten percent, with Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani at nine percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who famously crossed party lines to vote for President Obama in 2008, said today that he’s not necessarily supporting the president for reelection in 2012.
“I haven’t decided who I’m going to vote for,” Powell said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “Just as was the case in 2008, I am going to watch the campaign unfold. In the course of my life I have voted for Democrats, I have voted for Republicans, I have changed from one four-year cycle to another.
“I’ve always felt it my responsibility as a citizen to take a look at the issues, examine the candidates, and pick the person that I think is best qualified for the office of the president in that year. And not just solely on the basis of party affiliation,” he said.
Asked about the Republican field, Powell said there are some “interesting candidates,” but no one who has “emerged into the leading position.”
“So let’s see if anybody else is going to join, and we’ve got a long way to go,” he added.

Iran Discreetly Provided Humanitarian Aide To The Libyan Rebels Before the Fall of Tripoli
"We were in touch"
AFP
Iran "discreetly" provided humanitarian aid to Libyan rebels before the fall of Tripoli, Jam-e-Jam newspaper quoted Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on Sunday as saying.
"We were in touch with many of the rebel groups in Libya before the fall of (Moamer) Kadhafi, and discreetly dispatched three or four food and medical consignments to Benghazi," Salehi told the daily.
"The head of the National Transitional Council (NTC), Mustafa Abdel Jalil, sent a letter of thanks to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for having been on their side and helping," he added.
Since the Libyan uprising erupted in mid-February, Iran has adopted a dual approach -- criticising the Kadhafi regime for its violent assaults on the rebels while at the same time condemning NATO's military intervention.
On Tuesday, Iran "congratulated the Muslim people of Libya" after rebels overran the capital Tripoli, but it has so far distanced itself from officially recognising the NTC

U.S. Postal Service Spent $4.3 Million on Employees Who Did Nothing
Labor agreements mandate that postal employees have a certain amount of guaranteed work hours, which means that they cannot be laid off during periods of low mail volume

The U.S. Postal Service, which expects to lose $7 billion this year, spent $4.3 million on employees who did nothing in the first half of the year because of requirements in union agreements, an audit found.
The amount paid for so-called standby time has “significantly decreased,” down tens of millions of dollars from the amount spent just a couple of years ago, says The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of an audit.
Labor agreements mandate that postal employees have a certain amount of guaranteed work hours, which means that they cannot be laid off during periods of low mail volume or unplanned events like the breakdown of equipment. This leads to “standby time,” in which employees spend the day doing nothing — for example, waiting in a cafeteria or breakroom.
In fiscal 2009, the Postal Service logged over 1.2 million hours in standby time, costing taxpayers more than $30 million. This declined to around $20 million in 2010 and is on track to be less than $10 million this year.
The report explains the decrease in standby time by saying that the employee workforce has been reduced in size over the past two years to more appropriately align with expected workload.

Michele Bachmann Says She Would Consider Drilling in the Florida Everglades If It Can Be Done Responsibly
I'm sure all the lib media and lib websites will be attacking her tomorrow for saying this but she repeatedly says it would have to be done responsibly and we would have to consult the experts.
Tampa Bay Online
TAMPA -- Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says she would consider drilling for oil and natural gas in the Everglades if experts tell her it can be done responsibly.Bachmann is not the only candidate who has ever talked about drilling in the Florida Everglades. Flashback 2007
The United States needs to access all the energy resources it can, including Florida's Everglades and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Minnesota Congresswoman told the Associated Press Sunday, after a campaign stop in Sarasota.
"The United States needs to be less dependent on foreign sources of energy and more dependent upon American resourcefulness. Whether that is in the Everglades, or whether that is in the eastern Gulf region, or whether that's in North Dakota, we need to go where the energy is," she said.
"Of course it needs to be done responsibly. If we can't responsibly access energy in the Everglades then we shouldn't do it."
In 2002, the federal government, at the urging of President George W. Bush, bought back oil and gas drilling rights in the Everglades for $120 million. Bachmann, who wants to get rid of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said she would rely on experts to determine whether drilling can be done without harming the environment.

Suicide Bomber Kills 29 in Baghdad Mosque
Al Qaeda
AP
BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque Sunday night, killing 29 people during prayers, a shocking strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.
Iraqi security officials said parliament lawmaker Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the 9:40 p.m attack.
Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the bombing happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Baghdad neighborhood of al-Jamiaah. The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Baghdad.
Two security officials and medics at two Baghdad hospitals put the casualty toll at 29 dead and 38 wounded. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
Al-Moussawi put the death toll at only six and said there was no significant damage to the mosque. Conflicting death tolls are common immediately after attacks in Iraq.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing, but suicide attacks generally are a hallmark of al Qaeda
Libyan Rebels Won't Deport Lockerbie Bomber
Not surprising
cbsnews
TRIPOLI, Libya — The Libyan rebel government will not deport the man convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, its justice minister said Sunday.
New York Senators on Aug. 22 asked the Libyan transitional government to hold Abdel-Baset al-Megrahi fully accountable for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which killed 270 people.
But the transitional government Justice Minister Mohammed al-Alagi told journalists in Tripoli that the request by American senators had "no meaning" because al-Megrahi had already been tried and convicted.
"We will not hand over any Libyan citizen. It was Qaddafi who handed over Libyan citizens," he said, referring to the government's decision to turn al-Megrahi over to a Scottish court for trial.
Libyan rebels reject offer for Qaddafi talks
The Scottish government released al-Megrahi in 2009, believing he would soon die of cancer. He was greeted as a hero in his native Libya and met with Qaddafi. His current whereabouts are unknown

Hurricane Irene Leaves 11 Dead, 4 Million Without Power
Associated Press
More than 4 million homes and businesses were without power Sunday morning as Hurricane Irene continued to roar up the East Coast and took aim at the New York City area and New England.
Winds of up to 115 miles per hour whipped across the Eastern Seaboard, ripping power lines from poles and snapping trees in half. Hospitals, emergency call centers and other crucial facilities were holding up, but officials said it could get much worse as Irene churns north.
More than 1.3 million of the homes and businesses without power were in Virginia and North Carolina, which bore the brunt of Irene's initial march. Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. had about three-quarters of a million outages combined.

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez said Saturday that he will undergo his next round of chemotherapy in Venezuela instead of Cuba, where he has had previous cancer treatments.
Chavez said he would check in to the Military Hospital in Caracas on Saturday night and would begin his third phase of chemotherapy soon. He had the last two rounds of chemotherapy in Cuba.
"I'm not going to go to Cuba this time. In the coming hours, between today and tomorrow we'll be preparing for the third cycle," Chavez said during a televised Cabinet meeting.
Later, he appeared on a balcony of the presidential palace waving to a crowd of cheering supporters. They included a group that played Afro-Venezuelan music, beating on drums and dancing. Some chanted: "Onward, commander!"
The leftist leader swung his hips to the music and saluted black Venezuelans, saying: "Down with racism."
Chavez expressed optimism that he is overcoming cancer, referring to the "illness I had." He said he was making arrangements with his vice president, Elias Jaua, and other officials to "continue with this rhythm of treatment."
German Finance Minister Warns of 7-Year Global Recession
The world economy may witness "7 lean years"
xinhua
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland - German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Saturday that the world risks a 7-year recession due to slowdown and debt troubles in America, Europe and Japan, urging debt-ridden countries resort to drastic austerity.
It still needs time for eurozone countries to harvest fruits for their economic and financial reforms. Along with shadows of slowdown and debt crisis in major economies, the world economy may witness "seven lean years,"
Schaeuble said in a closing speech for the 4th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting for Economic Sciences held from August 23 to 27.
Organizers held on Saturday the last round of discussion at St. Gallen University in Switzerland, one of most famous university in Europe for economic studies.
Schaeuble called for closer cooperation in economic policy in Europe to secure long-term growth. "In order to make that happen, it is crucial for Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece to immediately balance their budgets and launch framework reforms," he said, referring the work as short-term pain of reform.

Gaddafi 'Seen in Zimbabwe on Mugabe's Private Jet' as Libya Rebels March on Dictator's Home Town
"Gaddafi has fled"..."it was claimed" reports the dailymail. Could be true, but might not be. If it is true, Gaddfi is staying at Mugabe's mansion in Zimbabwe. Here's the report
dailymail
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has fled Libya to Zimbabwe on a jet provided by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, it was claimed today, as rebels began the march on his home town.
President Mugabe's political opponents claim their spies saw Gaddafi arrive in the country on a Zimbabwe Air Force jet in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
They say the Libyan dictator was taken to a mansion in Harare's Gunninghill suburb, where agents from his all-female bodyguard were apparently seen patrolling the grounds.
'There's no doubt that Gaddafi is here as a 'unique guest' of Mugabe,' a spokesman for Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change told the Sun.
If he has left Libya, Gaddafi could have fled from an airbase in his home town of Sirte, which has been bombarded by Nato warplanes in recent days.

Perry Bills Dept. of Homeland Security $349M for Incarcerating Illegals
Fox News
Texas Gov. Rick Perry has asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for nearly $350 million to cover the costs he says Texas has incurred incarcerating illegal immigrants in state prisons and county jails.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Perry reiterated a claim he's often leveled against the federal government: that it's not doing enough to secure the border with Mexico and as a result, has allowed illegal immigrants to enter the U.S. and use taxpayer-funded resources, including the prison system.
The letter was dated Aug. 10, three days before the Republican governor formally announced he is running for president.
Reached after-hours Friday by phone, DHS spokesman Matthew Chandler said he wasn't in position to comment and said he could not confirm that the DHS had even received the letter.
Perry has been criticized by some fellow conservatives as being too lenient on illegal immigration issues. Unlike fellow GOP presidential hopeful Rep. Michele Bachmann
In his two-page letter to Napolitano, Perry described the formula used to come up with his $349.2 million bill, including $94.4 million to cover costs incurred by county jails
