Conservative outsider and tea-party pick Sharron Angle handily defeated more established rivals and appeared on track to win the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Nevada—which would give incumbent Democratic Sen. Harry Reid the opponent he had hoped to face.

With 57% of precincts reporting, Ms. Angle, a former state assemblywoman, was ahead of former casino executive Sue Lowden by 39.4% to 27.6%. Ms. Lowden had emerged as the early leader in the race and was embraced by the Republican establishment, which saw her as the party's best chance for knocking out Mr. Reid.
